Description:

Hestia's Children was founded in 1996 to provide a supportive, nurturing environment for mothers with dependent children. Mentors and other volunteers will provide on going support and guidance for these families as they make the transition to self-sufficiency.

The objective of this five-year program is to provide an environment for these families to realize their full potential as members of society.

Target Population:Hestia's Home

This program is initially limited to residents of Anoka County. Our target population are those families who are on the "borderline" for requiring public assistance. A woman earning $10.00 per hour, for example, may be disqualified from public assistance. Realistically, this woman will have a very difficult time providing food, clothing, and shelter for her family.

More importantly, the degradation and endless cycle of frustration will be avoided.

Services:

Each unit of two families has a primary mentor who, in addition to providing ongoing guidance and support, will coordinate participant's use of community resources. Such community resources may include:

  • conflict management and resolution training
  • career assessment and training
  • parenting classes
  • purchasing and preparing nourishing meals
  • financial planning and budgeting
  • home maintenance
  • community volunteer opportunities

During this five year program, affordable housing will be provided.

Referrals will come primarily from community action programs.

In Greek mythology, Hestia was the Goddess of the hearth. Her role was left over from earlier times when the hearth of the clan mother was the first fire altar and her housewifery functions of fire-keeping, food preparation and creating the sacred center of clan life were considered the holiest of human activities.
